Saint Thomas Heart

Cardiac MRI

A Cardiac MRI is a painless imaging test that uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to create detailed pictures of the heart and its structures. This test provides detailed information on the type and severity of heart disease to help the cardiologist decide the best way to treat heart problems such as coronary heart disease, heart valve problems, pericarditis, cardiac tumors or damage from a heart attack.

In some cases, a contrast dye to highlight the heart and blood vessels may be injected into a vein in the arm. Cardiac MRI has few risks, and offers assessment of cardiac anatomy and function.
