MBSAQIP Accredited Logo 2016The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®) is a joint program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

The MBSAQIP Standards ensure that bariatric surgical patients receive a multidisciplinary program, not just a surgical procedure, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. The accredited center offers preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for their severely obese patients.

Saint Thomas Medical Partners Center for Surgical and Medical Weight Loss and Saint Thomas Rutherford Bariatric Center were required to participate in a meticulous evaluation documenting our comprehensive program components, surgical processes, outcomes and undergo a rigorous site inspection. To qualify, programs must demonstrate safe bariatric surgical care with excellent short- and long-term outcomes. The accreditation process not only measures results but also thoroughly evaluates the documentation process, equipment, supplies, surgical expertise, surgical processes, trained bariatric personnel, as well as the availability of consulting services.

Saint Thomas Midtown surgeons, Dr. George Lynch and Dr. James McDowell, and Saint Thomas Rutherford surgeons, Dr. Wayne Westmoreland and Dr. Stephen Allen Rich are Metabolic and Bariatric Verified Surgeons.

Our Programs

Saint Thomas is one of the premier weight loss surgery programs in the nation, providing patients with four proven surgical options to correct metabolic deficiencies: laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (lap-band), laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy (sleeve), laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass (bypass) and Intragastric balloon.

Is Surgery Right For You?

Weight loss surgery currently provides one of the most effective therapies for diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, arthritis, asthma, acid reflux, infertility and high cholesterol. Operations performed by our board certified surgeons often restore the health of the morbidly obese by correcting abnormal metabolism.  Although morbid obesity is defined as being approximately 100 pounds or more above ideal body weight, it remains a complex chronic disease that is poorly understood by most people. Morbid obesity is referred to as “morbid” because of its life threatening effect on virtually every bodily organ, not to mention the often disabling social and psychological consequences. In addition to pounds overweight, the degree of obesity is also measured by body mass index (BMI). Because this disease severely limits quality of life and increases risk for premature death, the National Institutes of Health convened to discuss surgical approaches for obesity and reported, “the benefits outweigh the risk.” During this consensus, the National Institutes of Health report concluded that “diets, exercise programs, appetite suppressants and behavior modifications are not effective therapies for the morbidly obese person”. In addition, this medical panel reported that a more aggressive approach is reasonable in those strongly desiring substantial weight loss and have life-threatening, co-morbid conditions.

Following successful weight loss surgery most patients will experience, greater than or equal to, the following percentage of improvement in obesity-related health conditions:

Type 2 Diabetes: 95% improvement   Sleep Apnea: 75% improvement
High Blood Pressure: 92% improvement   Acid Reflux: 98% improvement
Cardiac Function: 95% improvement
Stress Incontinence: 87% improvement
High Blood Lipids: 87% improvement   Osteoarthritis: 82% improvement
