How to Help

Mission and History

Our Mission
Saint Thomas Health is a family of Middle Tennessee hospitals and physician practices united by a single mission: to provide spiritually centered, holistic care that sustains and improves the health of the communities we serve.

The Saint Thomas Health Foundation advances the caring ministry and medical excellence of Saint Thomas Health by raising funds to ensure everyone in our community has access to the highest quality of care. Contributions to the Foundation support direct care of the poor and uninsured, the development of facilities, patient care innovations, clinical research, scholarships and continuing education opportunities.

Our Core Values
The Foundation strives to uphold the core values of Saint Thomas Health, using these values as our guiding principles in all that we do.
  • Service Of The Poor - Generosity of spirit, especially for persons most in need
  • Reverence - Respect and compassion for the dignity and diversity of life
  • Integrity - Inspiring trust through personal leadership
  • Wisdom - Integrating excellence and stewardship
  • Creativity - Courageous innovation
  • Dedication - Affirming the hope and joy of our ministry

Our History
The Foundation was created in 1978 to support Saint Thomas Hospital's mission of serving those in need of healthcare without regard for their ability to pay. The Foundation's early work also centered on the development of enhanced teaching facilities and resources for medical education.

Early projects included Julius Jacobs Library, Laurence E. Grossman Medical Learning Center, and the Jeanette and Dan Rudy Cancer Center. In the 1990's the Foundation would be responsible for funding the first remote heart rate monitors in Metro Nashville's Ambulance fleet greatly improving emergency care. In the 2000's the Foundation placed hundreds of Automatic External Defibrillators in houses of worship throughout the region.

In 2002 the Foundation merged operations with the Baptist Hospital Foundation and became known as Saint Thomas Health Services Fund. As the Saint Thomas Health regional system of care grew the name was changed to Saint Thomas Health Foundation. The Foundation’s purpose is to support the development of facilities, patient care innovations, clinical research, and educational programs and to meet humanitarian needs. In a sense, the Saint Thomas Health Foundation represents hands of the donor community – reaching out to patients and families, nurses, physicians, and researchers to extend resources otherwise unavailable.

Over its 38-year history the Foundation has raised over 100 million dollars in support of Saint Thomas Health Hospitals and Outpatient Centers.
