Dr. Tompkins attended Vanderbilt Medical School, graduating in 1979. He trained for two years in General Surgery and then completed an Orthopaedic Residency at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Following his residency, Dr. Tompkins completed a Fellowship in Joint Replacement at the Institute of Bone and Joint Surgery in Phoenix, Arizona.
Dr. Tompkins is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and was re-certified in 1997 and 2008.
Dr. Tompkins joined Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance in 1986. He specializes in Joint Replacement and Adult Reconstructive Surgery. He also has extensive experience in general orthopaedics with a special interest in arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder and work related injuries.
Dr. Tompkins was on football scholarship while a Vanderbilt undergraduate and played four years for the Commodores before a knee injury ended his playing career midway through is senior year.
He serves as team physician for the Nashville Figure Skating Club and has traveled internationally as team physician for the U.S. Figure Skating Team.
