Saint Thomas Health Scholars
Nationally Recognized Industry Certifications
Healthcare and education are two of the largest industries in Nashville. It is only natural for these two industries to partner and provide ground-breaking opportunities for high school students who are interested in pursuing a future in the healthcare field. The Saint Thomas Health Scholars program is a result of this partnership.
The Saint Thomas Health Scholars will have the opportunity to engage with healthcare professionals, enter the healthcare workforce pipeline, gain leadership experiences and 21st Century skills, while receiving valuable leads to resources enhancing their careers beyond college through the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce’s workforce initiatives.
Saint Thomas Health is committed to providing opportunities for students in Metro Nashville Public Schools to advance their experiential learning and obtain industry certification in the healthcare field. It is our hope the Saint Thomas Health Scholars program will affirm students in their decision and calling to pursue higher education and a career in healthcare.
MNPS answers the call for industry certification
By the year 2020, more than half of all new job openings in Middle Tennessee will be in areas such as computer technology, nursing, and advanced manufacturing, according to the 2015 Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce workforce development study. In fact, more than 8,000 nursing careers remained unfilled in Nashville this past year. With healthcare being one of the largest employers in the area, Metro Nashville Public Schools is addressing how to prepare the future generation of nurses, doctors, and healthcare professionals.
In partnership with Saint Thomas Health, MNPS is launching a brand new program, the Saint Thomas Health Scholars. One hundred high school students from across the district have been selected to be a part of the program for the 2016-2017 school year. Saint Thomas Health has committed to providing opportunities for students in MNPS to advance their experiential learning and obtain industry certification in the healthcare field. Students will receive weekly hands-on industry certification mentoring and sit for the Clinical Certified Medical Technician Certification exam at the end of the school year. Certified graduates will have the opportunity to be hired immediately and receive future scholarship opportunities.
This type of partnership with the goal of preparing students for industry certification is the first program of its nature in the United States and will allow the public-private partnership to address critical local and statewide economic needs and allow students to advance in their field of interest through post-secondary options and career opportunities.
