Recently, we learned that BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee (BCBST)  will soon be exiting the Affordable Care Act Exchange in the three largest Tennessee markets, including Davidson, Rutherford and Sumner Counties.  If you currently have coverage through a BCBST plan on the Exchange, you should have received a letter notifying you that your coverage will end on December 31, 2016.  Saint Thomas Health is a provider in these networks.

We were surprised and disappointed to learn that BCBST was exiting these plans.  We are currently assessing the potential impact this will have on Tennesseans and investigating alternatives to the BCBST networks.

We are committed to support the people who have received access to coverage through the Exchange.  We are equally committed to finding alternatives to the networks discontinued by BCBST so that you will not experience an interruption in your care or need to select providers other than those you’ve come to depend upon and trust.

We will be updating this site when we have information to share on your options for keeping your relationship with Saint Thomas Health in 2017.  If you have specific questions, please email them to exchangequestions@sth.org.  We will provide you with an answer as quickly as we can.  There is also an option to leave a voice mail by calling 615-284-6278.

You may also access the BCBST website at www.bcbst.com. We also encourage you to share your concerns about network coverage with the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance via this link, www.tn.gov/commerce/section/consumer-affairs.

As part of Ascension, Saint Thomas Health advocates for 100% access to coverage for all Americans. It is disheartening to see this progress reversed through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee’s departure from the Exchanges.

BCBST ACA/Exchange/Marketplace/Individual plans for Patents/Members who reside in the counties where BCBST will continue to be offered  will only have the option of Network S as of 1/1/17.  These Patients/Members can continue to be treated by Saint Thomas Health hospitals and Saint Thomas Medical Partners through Network S as of 1/1/17.

BCBST ACA/Exchange/Marketplace/Individual plans for Patents/Members who reside in the counties where BCBST will not continue to be offered  must choose a new plan or be auto-enrolled as of 1/1/17.  To continue to be treated at Saint Thomas Health hospitals and Saint Thomas Medical Partners, these Patients/Members must choose CIGNA Connect.

Saint Thomas Health hospitals and Saint Thomas Medical Partners will continue to participate in the following plans with BlueCross BlueShield of TN:

  • Network P (Blue Preferred)
  • Network S (Blue Select)
  • Medicare Advantage (Blue Advantage Local and Regional PPO or HMO)
  • Network M (Mission Point Health Partners)

Answering Your Questions About Coverage Through the Exchange

I got a letter from BCBST that says I won’t be covered at the end of the year? What happened?

The decision was made by BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee to exit plans on the Exchange in 30 counties in Tennessee. In the Nashville region, these counties are: Cheatham, Davidson, Montgomery, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Trousdale, Williamson and Wilson. Cigna Connect does, however, cover all of these counties. Saint Thomas Health was not a part of the decision, but we are affected by it and so are you.

It is our goal to make sure that you are able to continue your relationship with Saint Thomas Health. We are now represented on the Exchange by Cigna Connect. All of our providers are in-network with Cigna Connect, and we are working to ensure that our hospitals and practices are listed online soon.

Why did BCBST drop the Exchange plans? What do I do now?

You can learn more about the BCBST decision at their website, www.bcbst.com. Open enrollment begins on November 1, 2016 and, at present, the only options available will be plans offered by Humana and Cigna. We were not made aware of the BCBST decision prior to their announcement on September 26, so we worked very quickly to create a solution so that you may continue your relationship with Saint Thomas Health and our physicians by enrolling in Cigna Connect. Please check this website often to see updates on our progress.

I’m concerned about this decision and my future coverage. Who can I talk to?

We will update this site whenever we have information on coverage options including Saint Thomas Health. You can submit specific questions to Saint Thomas Health via the “Ask a Question” function below email at exchangequestions@sth.org  or call 615-284-6278 to leave your question and we will get back to you as quickly as we can.

I have a BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Medicare plan.  Can I still receive care from Saint Thomas Health facilities and physicians?

Yes.  BlueCross Blue Shield of Tennessee is continuing to offer Medicare Advantage plans in all areas of Tennessee.  BCBST Medicare Advantage plans and their current providers are not impacted in any way by BCBST’s decision not to participate in Individual/Marketplace plans through the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
